Background of the Study
Government cultural policies are integral to revitalizing minority languages and preserving cultural heritage. In Benue State, Tiv language revitalization is a critical concern as globalization and urban migration threaten traditional linguistic practices. Recent government initiatives aim to promote Tiv language use in educational curricula, media broadcasts, and cultural events. These policies are designed to create an enabling environment where Tiv is actively used in public and formal domains, thus reinforcing cultural identity. Measures include standardized language curricula, funding for cultural festivals, and support for Tiv literature and radio programs. However, the success of these initiatives depends on effective policy implementation and community acceptance. This study investigates the effect of government cultural policies on Tiv language revitalization in Benue State by evaluating policy documents, stakeholder interviews, and media outputs. It seeks to determine the extent to which these policies foster Tiv language use and cultural transmission, while identifying challenges that hinder their impact.
Statement of the Problem
Despite government efforts to revitalize the Tiv language, significant challenges remain in Benue State. Inconsistent policy implementation, inadequate funding, and limited community involvement contribute to the gradual decline of Tiv usage. This disconnect between policy intent and actual practice undermines the effectiveness of revitalization efforts. The study addresses this gap by examining how government cultural policies impact Tiv language revitalization and by identifying obstacles that need to be overcome to ensure the language’s sustainability.

Significance of the Study

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to government cultural policies affecting Tiv language revitalization in Benue State and does not extend to other languages or regions.
